Mexicans immigrated to the United States back in the 1800s (Stanford, 2006). During 1848 the United States took over a part of Mexico which is now the Southwest (Stanford, 2006). Mexicans living in these areas were Mexican citizens before the acquisition. The United States even went into agreements with Mexico to have Mexicans work in the United States. Mexicans were treated with cruelty, while working the agriculture fields for years. The United States made several agreements with Mexico to have the Mexicans come work in the United States while American soldiers were fighting in the world wars. The labor shortage that the United States went through was reason enough to have Mexicans migrate to the United States as laborers. We have come a long way and diversity is practiced throughout the wor k place. It will continue as long as society continues to compare ethnic groups. Yes we are all different, and we should be proud of who we are, but arent we all human? Redlining used to happen and is still happening. Mexicans will not be able to purchase their own house much less, be the owner of a new vehicle. These types of comments are patterns of discrimination that Mexican Americans have faced at one time or another. The affirmative action was when the minority groups were given the opportunity to get jobs (Schaefer, 2006). Although in Texas and in some other states Mexican Americans are not the minority anymore the ethnic group overall is still a minority; therefore the group has faced and gone through the affirmative action. Presently there is still some social inequality and reverse discrimination is something that I have faced. Some places exist where they will not hire someone if they dont know how to speak Spanish even though English is the main language at the work pla ce. I find myself slowly seeping into darkness. The internet has really shown me things that I didn’t think I could ever see or like. I’ve built this strong attraction to drugs but not as a consumer, but instead as the supplier. Countless hours of my life have been spent on forums that the ordinary person wouldn’t easily find. Teaching me how to cut coke, cook crack and distribute it. I have a drug dealer’s ideal smartphone: no locations, three phone numbers within the same device and no gps lock whatsoever. I have applications where you can solicit just about everything from Coke to MDMA and weed. The internet has turned me into a self-learned chemist and home grower, giving me enough information on how to make some great crystal heroin or even growing some of the most potent marijuana possible. The changes that have affected Portobello road in the last decade have a had a great impact on the local community along with the future proposals which have been outlined for the area by the council in order to improve the area. For the purpose of the investigation it is useful to understand how the local community view these changes and proposals, and to gain an insight into the conflict that is arousing from the proposed changes and developments. Another article displays a variety of articles, one of which is to do with the division between the rich and the poor on Portobello road. This article is stating that there is a ‘widening gap between the rich and the poor in the UK and this is marked in the Notting hill area, which has multi million pound house prices while Goldbourne ward (northern section) is in the fifth poorest ward in inner London. ‘ Therefore many of the residents of the Goldbourne ward have organised a pilgrimage, which is a powerful reminder to everyone to challenge the status quo, and to work energetically for a fairer, more balanced society. Many of the people who are involved in this protest are trying to convince the council to give in to their requirements by organising these sorts of campaigns. However it is not easy for the council to equalise the 2 parts of the road because the census data on page shows that there is a high unemployment and low home ownership rate which means that most of the population live in rented houses, therefore it would take the council a long time to match up to the employment and home ownership rates which are 3 times higher in the Pembridge ward. Although the newspaper article is outlining resident views, it is still a secondary resource and so its reliability could be questioned, we cannot be sure that there is a division between the rich and the poor in the 2 wards, as the article is written by a person who may well be biased. However the primary data in the form of a shopping, environmental and residential house surveys show that the Pembridge ward is far better off than the Goldbourne ward in terms of house prices and quality. Even though most people situated in Portobello road such as the residents in the 1st NAG article are criticising the future proposals that have been made by the council (stated in question 4) there are also others who are in favour of these improvements i. e traders. In the article named ‘Portobello 2000’ Anne swift is an antiques dealer who talks about the future of Portobello road, and also mentions the importance of ‘Portobello having the opportunity to establish itself as the worlds leading centre for antiques and a leading market for general commodities. Anne sees the ‘over commercialisation’ of Portobello road as a good thing as this would encourage trade from tourism, however the people in the ‘planning rage’ article see this as gentrification steam roller, and as a threat to small businesses. Therefore this is causing a growing conflict between traders and residents. Anne swift suggest some of her own proposals which are in line with those stated in question 4, she believes that all traders have to offer high quality goods, by displaying better merchandise. She also states that improving the environment will create a more clean and spacious environment for everyone, especially tourists. Lastly she suggests the need for friendly and efficient service in order to satisfy customers. A questionnaire which was conducted on all parts of Portobello road in order to find out information about the residents and tourists who shop there. The results of the questionnaire were then converted in to a graph, which helped to analyse the relationships between the figures. From question 1 on the graph its evident that the majority of people questioned were residents (58%) and the remaining were either tourists or workers (42%). This proves that Portobello road attracts quite a lot of tourists and therefore has a large sphere of influence, as the figures are nearly similar to that of the residents. Out of the 58% of the residents questioned, 33% of them have lived in the area between 11-20 years, which showed that they knew the area well and were aware of the changes that have taken place over the last decade. Many of the residents questioned felt that the area had changed in terms of housing which is now of a better quality and residents, as new people are being attracted to the area everyday. 2% of the residents felt that the changes had made the area better, while 29% of the people felt that the changes were quite good for the area, however there were only 7% of residents who felt that the area had declined. This shows that Portobello road has made a great improvement since the last decade. The remaining results showed that 40%of the people questioned have visited Portobello road more than 10 times mostly for Antiques and general food shopping. Again, this shows that tourism is an important factor, which affects Portobello road everyday and has maximised its function. Steveland Judkins Morris was born on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan. He is more popularly known as Stevie Wonder. Stevie was blinded shortly after birth. His blindness was caused by a medical accident when he was born. He had to be put in an incubator and he didn't get enough air. In 1954 his family moved to Detroit. He developed his musical talent early in his life. By the age of 11 years old, he could play the harmonica and piano and he was a talented singer. Stevie was introduced to Motown's Berry Gordy, who recognized Stevie's talents. He was signed to Motown in 1962 and he was given the stage name "Little Stevie Wonder". He later grew out of this nickname and dropped the "little". Stevie had success with his single, 'Fingertips, Part 2', in 1963. By the time he was 18, Wonder had released hits such as 'Uptight', 'Nothing's Too Good for My Baby', 'I Was Made to Love Her', and 'For Once in My Life'. He followed that up with more hits, like 'My Cherie Amour' which went platinum in 1969 and 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours' in 1970. In 1970 Wonder married Syreeta Wright. After two years of marriage they divorced. In 1971, at age 21, Stevie bought recording equipment and started a small recording company. He used two albums that he recorded independently to negotiate with Motown. Since he was now 21, he could get a new contract that allowed him more freedom and more money. He began experimenting with use of the synthesizer. A serious automobile accident in 1973 almost claimed his life. The accident did take his sense of smell away. Talking Book was an album that he released in 1972 which included 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life' and 'Superstition'. These were two very big hits. Innervisions, released in 1973, included a hit song called ?Higher Ground'. Fulfillingness' First Finale in 1974, and Songs in the Key of Life in 1976 were both hit albums of Stevie Wonder's in the 1970s. During the 1980s Stevie Wonder released fewer solo albums but made success recording with other artists. He wrote and performed a song with Paul McCartney. It was an antiracism hit single 'Ebony and Ivory'. With Chaka Khan, Steveland performed 'I Feel for You'. His single 'I Just Called to Say I Love You', from the soundtrack of the film 'The Woman in Red' won an Academy award in 1985. In 1989 Wonder was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He signed a unique lifetime contract with Motown Records in 1992. Conversation Peace, was an album Wonder worked on for nearly eight years before its 1995 release. It got good reviews. In addition to his music, Stevie Wonder's career was distinguished by his activism for gun control, drunk driving and anti-hunger campaigns. Throughout his life he has influenced popular music in the categories of funk, rock and soul. He has inspired people to become musicians with his own music. He has also given a lot to civil rights in this country and in other countries (mostly South Africa). He has also taught blind people that they can be as talented as any person who can see. From loosing his sight to loosing his sense of smell, he has overcome many obstacles. Stevie has raised two children. He has also been married once. Wonder currently performs occasionally. He lives in Beverly Hills, California. He makes special performances for worthy causes because of his caring for other people. In 1996 Stevie won a Grammy award for Lifetime Achievement. Throughout the 1990s, Stevie has released 4 greatest hits albums and over 10 new albums. Although he was blind since infancy, Stevie Wonder never lacked musical talent. Behavioral Science in the Armed Forces Military sociology is the sociological study of the military. It examines issues such as military recruiting, race and gender representation in the military, combat, military families, military social organization, war and peace, and the military as welfare. Military sociology is a relatively minor subfield within the field of sociology. There are few universities that offer courses on military sociology, and only a handful of academic professionals that conduct research and/or write about military sociology. In recent years, most of the studies that can be classified as military sociology have been done by private research institutes or in military agencies, such as the Rand Corporation, the Brookings Institute, the Human Resources Research Organization, the Army Research Institute, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Furthermore, the research teams that conduct these studies are generally interdisciplinary, with researchers from sociology, psychology, political science, economics, and business. This by no means implies that military sociology is a small field. The military is the largest single government agency in the U.S. and the issues addressed surrounding it can have important ramifications for both military policy and the development of sociology as a discipline. The Basis of Service One of the most significant issues in military sociology in the U.S. post-World War II is the shift from drafting to voluntary service. This was a huge change and one whose impact at the time was unknown. Sociologists were and still are interested in how this change affected society, who the individuals were who entered the military voluntarily and why, and whether this change affected the representativeness of the military (for example, are there more uneducated minorities who enter voluntarily than were selected in the draft)? Social Representation and Access Social representation refers to the degree to which the military represents the population from which it has been drawn. Sociologists are interested in who is being represented, why the misrepresentations exist, and how representativeness has changed throughout history. For example, in the Vietnam War era, some civil rights leaders alleged that African Americans were overrepresented in the armed forces and therefore accounted for an unfair amount of casualties. Gender representation also developed as a major concern during the women’s rights movement, generating major policy changes concerning the participation of women in the military. In more recent years, when President Bill Clinton overturned the military ban on gays and lesbians, sexual orientation became the focus of major military policy debate for the first time. This topic has come into the spotlight once again after President Barack Obama repealed the Don’t ask, don’t tell policy so that gays and lesbia ns can now serve openly in the military.
